Texas Fruit & Vegetable Day April 5th, 2024

Texas Fruit & Vegetable Day: April 5th, 2024

  • Texas Fruit & Vegetable Day is a newly established holiday, thanks to a house bill passed by legislation in the Summer of 2023. This day aims to raise awareness about the health benefits of fruits and vegetables and inspire students to enjoy fresh, locally sourced produce.

LTISD Food & Nutrition Services is thrilled to be celebrating this occasion at Serene Hills Elementary with fruit and vegetable themed decorations and a farmer’s market style taste test featuring fruits and vegetables locally grown in Texas! Samples will include:

    • Organic Strawberries from Fredericksburg Peach Co. in Spicewood, TX

    • Organic Broccoli from Rio Fresh in San Juan, TX

    • Golden Beets from Val Verde Vegetable Co (El Sabino Farms) in Alamo, TX

Producers from Fredericksburg Peach Co. will be joining us to launch "Meet the Farmer Fridays," as part of the overarching Texas Farm Fresh Initiative, which seeks to enhance support for local farmers in school lunch programs. Students will have the opportunity to interact with the producers to learn more about where their delicious fruits and vegetables come from. Additionally, the cafeteria menu will feature a variety of fruits and vegetables including locally grown organic carrots from Gundermann Acres in Wharton, TX and organic Rio Star Grapefruit from South Texas Organics in Mission, TX.

Special guests, including representatives from the Texas Department of Agriculture and Texas House Representative Carrie Isaac, are anticipated to join us in the celebration. The Texas Department of Agriculture's communications team will be on-site, capturing memorable moments during the first-grade lunch.

Through this celebration, we hope to generate excitement around the importance of fruit and vegetables, cultivate an appreciation for fresh, local produce among our students, and provide support to our Texas agricultural producers.
