Norton's Notes - September 22, 2023

  • Lake Travis hosts Westlake Volleyball and Football - Friday, Sept. 22

    • Lake Travis High School will be a very busy place Friday as our volleyball and football teams host Westlake High School.

    • Inside the Cav Dome, Lake Travis varsity begins at 6:45 pm. The Cavs are coming off a big win against Dripping Springs Tuesday night, taking their district record to a perfect 7-0 and 33-4 overall.

    • Outdoors, it’s been four years since Lake Travis last hosted the “Battle of the Lakes.”

    • Public/non-student tickets went on sale 8:00 am, Monday, September 18 and sold out in just three minutes. This game will likely determine the District 26 champion.

    • We know the Round Gym and Cavalier Stadium will be rocking tonight, and we hope to see Cav Nation out in support of our teams and our other amazing student programs; Go Cavs!

    Superintendent’s 2023-2024 Student Advisory Council

    • We had our first meeting with our student advisory council this week. This is a great group of students from all grade levels and from all areas of the campus. I updated them on projects going on at the high school and around the district. They also had a chance to ask me, Principal Debbie Garinger, and our distinct leadership about topics that are important to them.

    Fentanyl Awareness Presentation at LTHS

    • Monday and Tuesday of this week, students at Lake Travis High School participated in a presentation led by Stefanie Turner with Texas Against Fentanyl. Ms. Turner shared her personal story and resources to help educate our students about the horrific dangers of this drug.

    • Passed by the 88th Texas Legislature, HB 3908—also known as Tucker's Law—requires annual research-based instruction related to fentanyl abuse prevention and drug poisoning awareness to be provided in public schools in grades 6 through 12.

    • We will be scheduling similar opportunities and presentations at our middle schools during the year.

Preliminary Design of LTHS New Competition Gym and Fine Arts Addition

    • In December 2022, the Board approved a pool of architect and engineering professional service providers for renovations, additions, alterations, and new construction capital projects for the bond program approved by voters in November 2022.

    • Claycomb Associates, Inc. was selected for the design of the new competition gym and fine arts addition at Lake Travis High School.

    • After several work sessions with our Facilities and Construction, Athletics, and Fine Arts departments, the Claycomb architect and design team presented a preliminary design of the new facilities to our trustees during Wednesday’s regular school board meeting.

    Design of HS #2

    • Last night VLK Architects, the group helping us design HS #2, met with our Design Committee to continue to receive feedback and input on the conceptual designs of the campus. This was our second meeting with this group and VLK Architects will now take the feedback they received last night and continue to bring forward more specific designs and concepts.
