Norton's Notes - April 29, 2024

  • Board Approves Building High School #2 in Two Phases

    • During Wednesday’s school board meeting, trustees voted to design and build High School #2 in phases, with Phase One accommodating approximately 1,500 students, and, if or when needed, Phase Two accommodating approximately an additional 500 students.

    • The board’s action comes as a result of new demographic data shared with trustees in March which indicates student enrollment will be lower than previously projected.

    • The projected change in enrollment is due to Travis County’s pending purchase of two significant parcels of land within LTISD boundaries.

    • These two parcels include more than 2,100 acres for conservation purposes.

    • Consequently, the planned development of more than 2,400 homes in these locations will not occur as initially projected.

    • High School #2 is expected to open in August 2027.

Board Discusses Potential Formation of Public Facilities Corporation (PFC) for Workforce Housing

    • The cost of housing in the greater Austin area and specifically within the geographic boundaries of the Lake Travis Independent School District has made it economically unaffordable for many staff to reside in our community.

    • This leads to added lifestyle stress and commute times for employees.

    • For over a year, the Lake Travis ISD administration has researched collaborations with area resources to secure affordable workforce housing options for District employees.

    • Also during Wednesday’s school board meeting, our trustees received a presentation on the potential formation of a Public Facilities Corporation (PFC) that would allow for workforce housing options in our District.

    • The discussion provided information on workforce housing in general and also outlined possible next steps to identify and create residential options for Lake Travis ISD employees.

    • The item will be brought back to trustees for potential action at the May 15 school board meeting.

LTHS FFA Dairy Team to Compete at State

    • This is the seventh consecutive year that our Dairy team has advanced to state.

    • We wish these talented students all the best as they compete at state on April 25, and we look forward to recognizing them and their advisors at a school board meeting later this spring.

Reminder About Attire, Behavior, and Attendance Expectations for Students

    • With warmer weather upon us, we want to take a moment to remind everyone of the importance of maintaining a safe and conducive learning environment at Lake Travis ISD.

    • While we embrace the joy of spring, let's also ensure that our enthusiasm is channeled in ways that enhance, rather than disrupt, our academic pursuits.

    • Each of our campus principals sent a letter to parents last week detailing attire, behavior, and attendance expectations for students as we approach the end of the year.

    • The letter is available on the LTISD website under “Latest News.”
