Rules for Food Given and Sold

Competitive Foods 

Any foods or beverages that may be sold or provided by entities other than the food and nutrition department and outside of schedule/time window of 30 minutes before through 30 minutes after meal service time ends.

Elementary Schools

  • All food or beverages given bell to bell will meet the USDA's Smart Snack in School's guidelines
  • No Competitive Foods shall be sold or given from bell to bell
  • Chocolate and all forms of candy, will not be sold, distributed, provided, or made available
  • Fundraising activities that involve the sale of food and/or beverages are not allowed before school and my not start until 30 minutes after the last bell

Student Birthdays - Elementary

  1. Birthday recognition in the classroom shall be limited to the last 15 minutes of the instructional day on the last Friday of the month
  2. At least one fruit or vegetable option will be available during these celebrations.

Middle Schools

  • If competitive food is sold or provided (outside of schedule/time widow of 30 minutes before through 30 minutes after meal service time ends), it must be approved by the Food and Nutrition Director. 
  • Do no serve or sell competitive foods on Testing Dates.

High School

  • Food fundraising during the school day must be approved by the principal
  • Food fundraising approved by the principal during the school day from the school store will have 20% of food sold meeting the Mart Snack Guidelines (as per the product calculator) and 40% will be composed of foods thar are less than/equal to 200 calories. All other food fundraising during the school day will be approved on a case by case basis by the principal.
  • Foods sold must not directly compete with the school nutrition department. 
    • If one of the Cav Cafes sells it, the same brand and product type cannot be sold for fundraising

Food Allergy Management in Classroom

To support a safer environment for food allergy management;, snacks that are provided to the whole class, including birthday celebration snacks, must have snacks chosen that meet the Food Allergy Management Plan Accommodations specific to the classroom.
