What Does a School Counselor Do?

Classroom Guidance- Guidance classes occur once a month with every K-5 class in the school and are about 30 minutes in length. The lessons focus on the six pillars of character- Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring and Citizenship.

Counseling- The counselor works with students individually and in small groups. Small group counseling sessions are held in the fall semester and may assist students in learning how to cope with issues such as conflict resolution, social skills, anger management or loss. Students, staff members or parents may initiate a referral to see the counselor.

Coordination- The counselor coordinates various programs such as STAAR Testing, A4L (Assessment for Learning) Intervention Program and Character Counts. We also work with the PALS (Peer Assistance and Leadership) Program to pair high school mentors with elementary school students. The counselor also plans various character education programs and school-wide assemblies throughout the year. Sandy Brown  coordinates the Mentor/Book Buddies Program.

Consultation- The counselor communicates regularly with parents/guardians to address any concerns they may have regarding their child’s education. The counselor also consults with administrators, teachers, and staff members to ensure a positive educational experience for all students.
