• Curriculum Night 2019

    8/21/19

Dear Hudson Bend Middle School Parents and Guardians,

Our second week is almost in the books, and your children are in full swing for the 19-20 school year. I’ve been amazed at both the level of instruction your children are taking part in, as well as the terrific behavior our students display every day. That does not happen on accident and I know credit is due to our community and the wonderful job each of you have done raising these students.

    Curriculum Night

We are hosting our annual Curriculum Night next Wednesday the 28th from 6:30 to 8:17. Starting at 6:30 we are going to have all parents go to their child’s first period class and proceed to follow their child’s schedule over the next couple hours. You will be able to experience the trials and tribulations of finding all of you child’s classrooms, meeting their amazing teachers, and resisting the temptation to talk with your friends a bit too long in the hallway between classes. I joke, but I do think it is a great experience to walk in your child’s footsteps and see their daily environment. We will have faculty and staff in the hallways to help you find your way through the building. Classes will be 11 minutes long with a 5 minute passing period. Each teacher has a brief overview of their classes ready to share and are looking forward to meeting you. You will receive a copy of your child’s schedule next week when they take one home and we will have extras printed out just in case your child forgets to give you their schedule.

PARKING – We will obviously have a full house during this event and I ask that you either carpool with friends or consider using our secondary parking lot at the Lake Travis Educational Development Center located in front of Lake Travis Elementary at 607 RR 620. We will have four buses shuttling parents from that site to HBMS starting at 6:00 and running until 8:40 (LAST BUS).

    Frequently Asked Questions:

    •  Are students allowed to join us during this event? We do not have any issues with students being present during Curriculum Night. Heck, students are sort of our job, right?! We love your students! However, we recommend that students stay at home based on the space available in each classroom and the hallways when all parents are present. We do have a finite amount of space and if everyone brought their child, you can guess what that would be like. I also believe you, as a parent, will enjoy the presentations better without your child present.
    • What if I have two children? In short, we only have one run at this evening and it is all happening at the same time. Therefore, we do not have the ability at accommodate all situations with multiple children. This is an event where parents follow a schedule and tardies will not be taken. Please feel free to attend the classes that best suits your situation IF you do fall into this category.
    • How do I get my student's schedule? Your child will make a schedule for you and bring it home to you on Tuesday. Teachers will also have them take a picture and text/email that picture to you. We will have extras printed in the front on Wednesday night just in case the aforementioned plan falls through.

    Sincerely,

    Thomas Payne, Principal

    __________________________________________________________

    6th Grade Open Doors

    8/10/19

Dear 6th Grade Parents and Guardians,

We know the transition to 6th grade is different for each student. Some are excited and ready to go and others are more anxious and nervous. Being able to unlock their locker and find their classes rank high on the list of stressors. We want to help ease that stress. This Monday before school starts, we will unlock the front doors from 2:00-5:30 for any 6th grade parent to accompany their child while they get more comfortable with their locker and/or the building. This is an opportunity for 6th graders only so the halls will be less crowded than at Buc Bash. Our staff will not be available, so you must be with your child at all times. This is simply an opportunity for you to work with your child to lower their anxiety and help them feel more comfortable for their first day of school in a new building.

You may see some teachers working in their classrooms, but we respectfully ask that you do not try to meet them or ask them for assistance. They are trying to get ready for the first day of school and are working extra hours to do so.

In addition, if you missed Buc Bash or lost your schedule/locker information, we will not be able to provide that information during this time. This time is designed to assist those 6th graders that want extra time in a less crowded environment than Buc Bash. Thank you in advance for understanding.

Finally, please only decorate the inside of your locker. The outside should remain completely clean. Also, tardies are always a concern, so let me assure you we have a plan. Tardies for 6th graders will not count until we feel the majority are ready. At that point, we will let the students know and will work individually with any that are still struggling to open their locker or find their classes during the passing period. We are here to support them and will help problem solve any issues they are having.

    Sincerely,

    Thomas Payne, Principal
