Board Elections

In Texas, local school board members are elected by the registered voters within specific school district boundaries. The Lake Travis Independent School District (LTISD) is one of approximately 1,040 public school systems in Texas and its board members are elected at-large. This means each board member, or trustee, represents the entire school district rather than single-member positions that represent a sub-portion of the district. Each trustee is elected to serve without compensation for overlapping terms of three years each.

According to the Texas Association of School Boards (TASB), if a vacancy occurs on the board, the remaining trustees may 1.) fill the vacancy by appointment until the next regular trustee election, 2.) order a special election to fill the vacancy for the unexpired term; or 3.) under special circumstances, leave the position vacant until the next available election.

Candidates gain a place on the ballot by the timely filing of an application for that purpose.  The designated dates for the filing of an application are published prior to an election.  The application is filed at the LTISD Administration Building, 3322 Ranch Road 620 South, Austin, Texas, 78738 during normal office hours.

There is no filing fee and no compensation for the office of the School Trustee.  Candidates are designated by a place on the ballot.  The office sought is "School Trustee, Place ___."  Any application that does not specify the Place on the Board of Trustees being sought is deemed not to be valid.

Candidate Application Forms & Reports

Candidates may pick up a packet or request one to be emailed to them from the LTISD Administration Building, 3322 Ranch Road 620 South, Austin, Texas, 78738 (512) 533-6020.  The packet contains instructions, an application, and forms required for the election.  The application, forms, and instructions are also available online from the Secretary of State and State Ethics Commission websites.

If the filing due date is a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday, the Monday following becomes the due date.
