Board Names Superintendent Lone Finalist

(Austin, TX) – The Lake Travis Independent School District Board of Trustees has named Curtis Null as the lone finalist in its search for a new superintendent. The action was taken at a special called meeting of the board held Thursday, May 1. Dr. Null is expected to succeed Steve Flores who has been serving as the district’s interim superintendent since late February.

“I am honored to be named the lone finalist in Lake Travis ISD,” said Dr. Null. “The opportunity to serve in one of the premier school districts in Texas is one to be cherished. I look forward to working with the students, parents, staff, and community to honor the tradition of excellence in Lake Travis while we build an even brighter future together.”

By law, the district is required to observe a 21-day waiting period before Dr. Null can officially be hired.

“Dr. Null is a dynamic leader with a proven track record of success and a deep commitment to building strong relationships,” said Erin Archer, Lake Travis ISD Board President. “He brings an impressive record of leadership outcomes, successful school programs, and dynamic community involvement. We’re confident he will guide our district through future challenges and help our students and staff thrive. We’re excited to welcome Dr. Null to the Lake Travis family.”

Dr. Null has served as Superintendent of Conroe ISD near Houston since June 2018, leading Texas’ 7th largest school district with approximately 73,000 students and over 10,000 employees. He began his Conroe ISD career in 2000 at The Woodlands High School and has since held various roles including principal, Assistant Superintendent, and Deputy Superintendent. He holds degrees from the University of Houston (B.A. and Ed.D.), the University of Florida (M.Ed. in Sports Medicine), and certifications from Sam Houston State University. Dr. Null serves on numerous local and regional boards and has been honored for his civic leadership, including being named Community Citizen of the Year (2022). He and his wife Tanya, a pre-K teacher in the district, have two children—both graduates of Conroe ISD.

Under Dr. Null’s leadership, Conroe ISD experienced significant growth and recognition. Since 2018, the district has opened 10 new schools, including a new high school. In November 2023, voters approved a $1.97 billion bond—the largest in Montgomery County history. The district maintains the second lowest tax rate in the greater Houston area and is ranked among the top 10 most efficient large school districts in Texas. Conroe ISD has consistently earned high marks for academic and financial performance. It has been named a Top Workplace by the Houston Chronicle and, for two consecutive years, was the highest-ranked public school district on Forbes’ list of America’s Best Large Employers.

In February 2025, the Lake Travis school board retained JG Consulting, Inc. to assist with the superintendent search. The process involved gathering stakeholder input, conducting a nationwide search that drew 38 applicants, and interviewing top candidates through a comprehensive evaluation.
