TEA releases A-F accountability ratings from 2023

The Texas Education Agency (TEA) has released its preliminary 2023 A-F accountability ratings. As you may already know, these ratings had been delayed statewide for two years because of judicial rulings. The issuance of 2024 ratings remains pending due to ongoing litigation, while 2025 ratings are scheduled to be released on August 15, 2025.

TEA introduced the A-F rating system in 2017. Since then, the system has undergone several complex updates. It is intended to provide educators and parents with information on how schools are performing in three key areas: Student Achievement, School Progress, and Closing the Gaps. In addition to student performance on STAAR, these areas take into consideration student academic growth; graduation rates; College, Career, and Military Readiness; and comparisons to other schools with similar demographics.

Below are the campus ratings and overall scores from 2023 released today:

  • Lake Travis High School - B (89)

  • Lake Travis Middle School - A (92)

  • Hudson Bend Middle School - B (89)

  • Bee Cave Middle School - A (94)

  • Lake Travis Elementary School - B (86)

  • Lakeway Elementary School - A (91)

  • Bee Cave Elementary School - B (87)

  • Lake Pointe Elementary School - A (93)

  • Serene Hills Elementary School - A (91)

  • West Cypress Hills Elementary School - B (80)

  • Rough Hollow Elementary School - A (93)

In addition to campus ratings, school districts also receive a rating from TEA. Beginning with 2023, district ratings are calculated by averaging the scores of their campuses, with more weight given to schools that have more students in grades 3-12, based on enrollment numbers taken in October of that school year. For 2023, Lake Travis ISD received a rating of B (89).

Our dedicated teachers and administrators in Lake Travis ISD continue their focus on key strategies to improve outcomes for students, including:

  • Identifying essential standards for each grade level and subject area and providing additional support for students to achieve mastery of those standards;

  • Utilizing a common language and methodology for teaching the writing process in all grade levels and subject areas so that students receive consistent reinforcement in effective ways to respond to questions in writing;

  • Developing and refining our district curriculum to focus on rigorous instruction and to provide teachers with the resources they need to meet the needs of all students;

  • Analyzing student performance data on common assessments and using the Professional Learning Communities process to identify appropriate teaching strategies and interventions; and

  • Engaging in professional development activities that will help teachers and staff address the needs of each student in the classroom.

As your interim superintendent, I applaud the dedication and hard work of our students, teachers, staff, and families. However, while I support accountability, the current rating system is limited in scope and is not a complete measure of our exceptionally high academic and extracurricular performance districtwide. There is a great deal more to our district than what can be encapsulated in a single letter grade. Lake Travis ISD supports the whole child.

In closing, you are encouraged to visit TXschools.gov and view campus and district report cards to see how each performed in the 2022-2023 school year. We will keep you informed as 2024 and 2025 ratings become available.

Respectfully,

Steve Flores, Ph.D.
Interim Superintendent of Schools
