Andy Michael promoted to Director of Security/Chief of Police

Lake Travis Superintendent of Schools Paul Norton is pleased to announce that Andy Michael will serve as Director of Security/Chief of Police, effective May 3. Prior to his promotion, Mr. Michael served as the District’s Safety and Security Coordinator.

“Now more than ever, safety and security are at the forefront of daily routines across Lake Travis ISD,” said Mr. Norton. “Andy’s decorated experience in law enforcement, coupled with his keen understanding of our safety and security operations districtwide, will be a tremendous benefit for our staff, students, parents and community. I look forward to his continued service and to his leadership as our District's first Director of Security/Chief of Police.” 

Mr. Michael joined Lake Travis ISD in 2018, serving as Safety and Security Coordinator. He helped introduce the Standard Response Protocol districtwide—a proven method of uniform language and actions used by students, staff, and first responders during school incidents. Mr. Michael was also instrumental in the implementation of student ID badges districtwide. Prior to joining Lake Travis ISD, he spent 28 years in law enforcement and is a veteran of the United States Air Force. Mr. Michael served the Austin Police Department (APD) for 22 years as a police officer, detective, sergeant, lieutenant, and division commander prior to his retirement. As a commander at APD, he served in a leadership role for hundreds of officers in numerous units including Patrol, Internal Affairs, Special Operations, Police Technology, Risk Management, Training, and Recruiting.

Mr. Michael earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Organizational Leadership from Mountain State University in West Virginia. He and his wife Trish have lived in Lake Travis for 22 years, and they have two children, Anthony and Oliviaboth of whom attend LTISD schools. 

In December 2020, Lake Travis trustees unanimously approved the establishment of a school district police department to create new opportunities and additional support for student services, traffic safety, and staffing of special events across our schools. Since then, district officials continue to transition from the current School Resource Officer to a district-run program. The Lake Travis ISD police department is expected to be fully operational with the start of the 2021-2022 school year.

As Director of Security/Chief of Police, Mr. Michael will oversee the District’s safety and security program and coordinate emergency operations and response plans; direct and manage the District’s police department; and coordinate efforts with other law enforcement officers; and ensure enforcement of all federal, state, and local laws and ordinances.
