District preps to roll out seat belts on all buses
Click, tug and snug. Beginning with the 2018-2019 school year, those are the three easy steps all Lake Travis ISD students who board the bus will be expected to perform.
With voter approval of the district’s bond election last November, district officials purchased 51 new school buses equipped with seat belts. Additionally, staff from the district’s transportation department is currently retrofitting its existing bus fleet with seat belts. In all, more than 100 LTISD school buses will be equipped with two-point lap seat belts and three-point lap and shoulder seat belts, ensuring all students who ride the bus will be properly secured.
Senate Bill 693 requires all Texas school districts to install seat belts on any school buses purchased after September 2017. As a result, the district allocated more than $10 million to its 2017 bond package to purchase new school buses as well as retrofit its existing fleet with seat belts.
